CUBA NOVA

Drummer Tim Hahn and the percussionists Alexis Herrera Estevez and Elio Rodriguez Luis have known each other for years now, since they became part of the successful crossover formation Klazz Brothers & Cuba Percussion, which unites different genres – classical, salsa and jazz – in entertaining and energetic fashion.

But now these three exceptional artists have added a second string to their musical bow, and their new, seven-part band Cuba Nova has released its début album, "Agua". With support from such Cuban musicians as sax player Regis Molina, who has worked together with the stars of Buena Vista Social Club, they have produced a highly varied album, ranging from world music to lounge jazz. It goes without saying that the charismatic voice of Cuban singer Olvido Ruiz Castellanos occupies centre stage in the ten songs. Her powerful vocals are heard to good effect in the arrangements of lady pianist Marialy Pacheco, e. g. in the groove-dominated Latino-Fusion track "Ofemi", or in the funky song "Maria se fue". But Castellanos can also be a seductive R&B lady ("Dime Corazon") or – as in the smooth jazz club ballad "Como dos Estranos" – an exquisitely sensitive siren.
