2007 | The Grieg Code

'The Grieg Code' is a brand new work written by Geir Lysne for a big jazz ensemble. The work is a musical experiment where Lysne has been asked to compose new music, based on Grieg originals. The project was initiated by 'The International Grieg Society' and 'Grieg07'. 'The Grieg Code' will premiere at Nattjazz in Bergen, 31st of May 2007.

Background

The idea behind ‘The Grieg Code' is to continue an experiment Lysne did on the CD 'Boahjenasti', where he wrote a musical anagram on one of the movements from 'Per Gynt suite'. The musicians quickly guessed that this was Grieg, but after 16 concerts and a CD-recording, none of them had cracked the code and figured out which movement it was. He found this result to be most interesting, since they are all well educated musicians performing at the summit of Norwegian jazz, and several of them even active contemporary composers. The project was started, and later presented to 'The International Grieg Society', who gained great interest, and ordered the work for a big jazz ensemble to their international Grieg-conference in 2007: Beyond Grieg. Edvard Grieg and his Diverse Influences on Music of the 20th and 21th Centuries.

The music

Lysne will choose different elements from the original compositions to work with, and arrange them in a way that the listener will get associations to Grieg, but without using obvious references or quotes. It is not a jazz version, but an independent work where all the material originates from Grieg. The goal is to get the audience to say; "This has to be Grieg, but I have never heard it before".

Geir Lysne Ensemble

At ‘The Grieg Code' the audience will get to experience, for the first time, Lysnes new project - Geir Lysne ensemble. The cast consists of the most outstanding musicians within North European jazz, featuring artists like: Tore Brunborg, Steffen Schorn, Arkady Shilkloper, Bjørn Kjellemyr, Terje Isungset, and more. 'The Grieg Code' will be accompanied by a specially designed light-show.
