New York - Köln Project

New York - Köln Project(5/2007)

Chris Torkewitz (p,comp) - Phil Maturano (dr) - Michael O'Brien (bs,comp)

Phil and Christian have been playing in Europe together for over four years. While based in Cologne, they forged a great and unique musical connection. The two of them have developed a very individual repertoire of Latin jazz arrangements and original compositions. Phil and Michael met over a year and a half ago in New York City, shortly after Phil relocated to New York. They have played on numerous gigs and informal jam sessions in a number of different styles throughout the city. In January of 2007 Michael and Phil met to plan out the possibility of doing a project together. They both wanted to play with Christian. There was just one problem. The Atlantic Ocean. Through a number of truly serendipitous events, Christian was going to come to New York City for a weekend, for an unrelated purpose. The three jumped at the chance to rehearse, then record the material that Christian and Phil had developed in Germany, as well as an arrangement of a standard, and a composition of Michael's. The resulting cd is the product of those magical, and intense four days.
